Hi, I’m Hugh. A carpenter based in South London. I make kitchens, cabinets, bookshelves, wardrobes and furniture.
My first memories of carpentry are as a kid passing tools, various bits of hardware and holding things in place (not always the right place) for my dad on DIY projects at home.
A few years later, I developed my building skills with NGOs working on reconstruction: in Peru with Pisco Sin Fronteras, in Haiti with Shelters International Disaster Response and then in New Orleans with Common Ground and Lowernine.org. It was in New Orleans that I spent a year working with a fantastic carpenter called Tim who “taught me everything I know”, doing jobs ranging from house framing to bespoke kitchens.
On my return, I launched carpentry&whatnot in East Sussex. I put the company on hold when I was offered a great opportunity to improve my joinery skills, working on high-end kitchens for Symes in London. Then, in 2016, I re-established carpentry&whatnot in a workshop in Battersea, where you’ll still find me, working on projects all over South London and the South East. Plenty of examples of my work are under the Projects tab.
I am always excited to hear about and discuss new projects so do get in touch. Hope to hear from you soon.
Recommendations:
“We cannot recommend Hugh and carpentry&whatnot highly enough. He was everything we had hoped for. Prompt, reliable and conscientious. The whole process from design through to installation was clear and well coordinated. We are thrilled with our pieces. The storage for the hallway blends [and] creates a calmer entrance. The bespoke desk is beautiful and we’re really proud to have such a striking and original piece of design. The finish is excellent.” Rachel
“Hugh did a great job. Great attention to detail, (and unlike many) really cared about getting the job done to an extremely high standard. Left the place tidy, straightforward and courteous to deal with. Thoroughly recommended.” Joana
“Hugh recently completed some work in our kitchen including new shelving and cupboards around our Aga. He is a very talented craftsman who works with great precision to produce outstanding results. He was good at listening to our requirements and sensitive to retaining the character of the surroundings. From our rather vague brief he used his knowledge and experience to make practical and imaginative suggestions. I cannot fault his workmanship, reliability and commitment and thoroughly recommend him.” Kate
